The first major battle of the Civil War was fought in Georgia, from September 18 to 20, 1863. The Battle of Chickamauga was the Union’s most significant defeat in the Western Theater and had the second highest number of casualties of any Civil War battle, after the Battle of Gettysburg. The Army of the Cumberland under Major General William Rosecrans faced the Confederate Army of Tennessee under General Braxton Bragg.

By early September, Rosecrans had forced Bragg’s army out of Chattanooga and was following them south. Bragg, in an attempt to reoccupy Chattanooga, decided to encounter a portion of Rosecran’s army and defeat them, allowing him to return to the city. On the way north he encountered the Union army.

This game consists of a series of missions, each addressing a key part of the overall battle. The last mission is to re-fight the entire battle in a single game. As the total battle was fought over a vast area, this final mission is on a different scale than the more detailed individual actions.

The ‘Battles of Chickamauga’ consist of:

  • 7-mission ‘Tutorial’ campaign, played as the Union.
  • 4-mission ‘Starting Shots’ campaign. Key events of the September 19 action.
  • ‘Commitment’ campaign of 4 missions. More key events from the September 19 action.
  • ‘Deadlock’ campaign of 4 missions. Key events of the September 20 action.
  • ‘Twilight’ campaign of 4 missions. More key events from the September 20 action.
  • A single mission ‘The Battle of Chickamauga’. A large-scale mission to re-fight the entire battle.
  • With the exception of the tutorial, all missions can be played on either side.
