This scroll painting “The Song of Eternal Sorrow” was created by Kano Sansetsu during the Edo period of Japan. The complete set is divided into two volumes and describes the tragic love story of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Consort Yang. The first volume illustrates the events of Emperor Xuanzong’s obsession with beauty that led to the tragic death of Consort Yang at the Mawei Post Station. The second volume mainly portrays the emperor’s endless longing for Consort Yang.
