You are an investigative journalist who is “hungry” for an eye-catching story. You heard the news about a caretaker at this industrial facility who went crazy and killed all of his co-workers. Now, the urban legend is that this “caretaker” has returned to this industrial facility and people have seen this “monster come to life.” You want to discover this myth. You are hungry for the truth and maybe this caregiver is hungry for something more.
- Visual Variety as an Immersive Horror Experience: The visual variety of Caretaker’s chapters is closely tied to the game’s narrative arc. The environments will reflect a caregiver’s “level of dangerously crazy mind.” As you travel to the lower basements, which acts as a metaphor for “descending into the depths of the human mind,” the environments will reflect a “caretaker’s level of dangerously insane mind.”
- Environmental Storytelling: Since we play an investigative journalist, every clue we find about the backstory will be more rewarding for the player and will also help them solve basic puzzles in order to progress in the game. The more the player explores the environments, the more they will experience the psychosis of this criminally insane mind of the “caretaker” and thus the player will form some sort of metaphysical connection with this “evil enemy”, thus seeing and experiencing a plethora of completely different hallucinations. This entire narrative experience will not be told through cutscenes or voiceovers, but through carefully placed environmental cues, for the player to discover and explore. We deliberately omitted the use of cutscenes and voiceovers to create a “more immersive horror experience” for the player.
- Brutal AI: Without giving too much away, just know this: if you feel or hear anything dangerous or sinister, just run and hide. Try not to get caught. Actually. In Caretaker, you really don’t want to get caught.
