Meike is the daughter of the noble von Essen family. The von Essen name, once one of Germany’s richest families, has been tarnished after a series of poor business decisions led to financial ruin.
Desperate to regain their former wealth and glory, Meike’s parents attempt to marry their only daughter to businessman Walter Gerhardt. Meike has no affection for Walter (she barely knows the man), but her mother is determined to make the union work and Meike sees no way out of their impending engagement.
Meike’s future as the wife of the cold and careless Walter seems set in stone, until the carriage carrying her and her family through the forest to Walter’s home in Augsburg is attacked by bandits.
Meike’s parents die, although Meike manages to escape with her faithful maid, Henrieke. The pair run through the forest in search of shelter, and as they do so, they find a mysterious ruined castle hidden among the trees.
This castle, as Meike soon discovers, belongs to a young woman named Magdalena. Short in stature and with flowing blonde hair, Magdalena seems like a sweet and innocent thing, but there is more to her than meets the eye.
Magdalena is, in fact, a vampire and now that she has Meike in her clutches, it seems unlikely that Meike will ever be able to escape.
