The gods have abandoned Midgard. Once a thriving land teeming with beasts and mythical beings, it is now rotting from within, contaminated by unknown forces. Odin’s chosen guardians of the kingdom are gone. In their absence, the sacred Elder Tree they swore to protect is open to abuse and manipulation. Now, the only remnants of hope reside in Estra, the daughter of humanity’s last great leader. With a heavy emphasis on narrative, Estra’s journey through Midgard is filled with Norse lore, mysterious twists, and momentous decisions. Players will converse with a variety of characters and share Estra’s discoveries as she learns more about her family’s past and the darkness sweeping the kingdom. Estra’s path is filled with difficult decisions and unreliable characters that can lead her astray. Its story is intertwined with the player’s ability to discern fact from fiction and decide between good and evil. Avoid the battle, help your companions, save your people, but remember that the consequences are Estra’s responsibility. Along the way, players must solve increasingly challenging puzzles that reveal revealing secrets, fantastic abilities, and hidden passages. While trial and error is helpful, patience is necessary. Not all problems allow for multiple errors and failure is certainly an option. The answers you seek may be lost if you make the wrong decision. Violence isn’t always necessary, but when the going gets tough, ATONE’s combat is a delicate dance of sword and axe. The combat is based on the rhythm game genre and mechanics from titles like Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution. Music is a crucial component, and each fight gets its own song. ATONE’s music and sound design are composed by a variety of incredible artists, including: Julian Ratschiller, Australian artist Luminist (aka James Shuar), who combines a synth-heavy score with digitally corrupted sounds of era-specific instruments, and Andrew Prahlow, whose name can be attributed to the critically acclaimed hit Outer Wilds and epics like Star Wars and Blade Runner.
